Why you simply must visit Slovenia Immediately

There are so many wonderful things I can say about this country.   The term “paradise” is usually saved for a deserted beach, palm trees, the ocean lapping up onto the shore.  But paradise for me, completely summed up this beautifully magical country, full of charm, with bags of star quality oozing out of it.  The snow-capped peaks of the Alps towing down, with a majestic presence, as you wonder through the streets of this country’s capital, Ljubljana, take your breath away in every moment.  The present moment.  And that complete feeling of awe, and wonder washes over you, as you explore a country that is relevantly untouched by tourism in comparison to its very touristic neighbours.

The mountains will blow your mind.  Like being inside the backdrop of a painting.   The tantalising turquoise rivers that flow through the streets, as well as in the lakes of the majestic giant that is Lake Bled, will also open your eyes to a new feeling of paradise, one that doesn’t resonate with white sandy beaches.

Slovenia is very much a place for travellers that love the great outdoors.  To be fully immersed within the colour green, of nature, is to be truly alive & this wonderful country will open your heart to that even more.  Slovenia’s land mass is covered by forest – more than half actually, so embrace Mother Earth & all that has been created, with a deep breath of that beautifully fresh mountain air.

Hiking, skiing, snowboarding & cycling are big here.  There are rivers to be rafted, and you can even kayak through the jade green rivers of Ljubljana, or rent a stand up paddle board, whichever you prefer.  There are caves to explore, horses to be ridden, canyoning through waterfalls or just plain old sunbathing on the coast.  The world is your oyster.

The architecture as you wonder through the streets of Slovenia is rustic and full of character and I was fascinated by this feeling of being inside a fairy tale, complete with castles.  I spent a lot of time photographing buildings that just had a style & personality of their own, enchanted by the unrefined venetian style windows & doors, that give this country such a picturesque and homely feel.

This countries charisma and beauty is embedded by the Slovenians themselves.  These people are just what life is all about. The true foundation of an already mesmerising country. Friendly, warm, kind, extremely hospitable, in every sense of the word, and most importantly – welcoming.  They give off a sense of quiet confidence, knowledge, open mindedness, and compassion.  As a traveller exploring this beautiful country, Slovenians will put an arm around you, engage you in a wide smile, and look at you with eyes full of wisdom about their country.  They paint a very relaxed & genuine energy, as they go about their lives, surrounded by the beauty of this European country.

The food and wine in Slovenia makes its mark on the palette in every way.  Authentic, fusion, traditional Slovenian foods, accompanied by incredibly flavoured wines, that tickle every taste bud, and have you vying for more.  Especially as the majority of restaurants & bars only serve wine at 100ml a glass.  Still, savour the taste – Slovenian wine is first class, and very accessible whilst travelling on a budget.

Slovenian food is a real blend of different types of foods from its very well versed neighbours.  If you are a desert person like me, you will be in heaven in this country.  Their deserts are extremely elaborate and decadent, not to mention delicious.  Slovenian cakes are a must have experience whilst visiting, and the culture of alfresco dining even in the winter is very much a thing here.  So sit back & relax with your cake & coffee and watch the world go by.

Can you travel here on a budget? Absolutely.  Depending on the time of year, flights from the UK are very cheap and accommodation, whether you choose a hostel, air bnb or hotel is really reasonable.  Food, drink and travel around the country is cheaper than the majority of European countries I have travelled to, and that is a lot!

Embrace this incredibly cool cultural wonder of central Europe for its wondrous beauty, warmth of vitality and twinkle of magic.
